Polarimetry is becoming an increasingly popular technique in biomedical imaging to probe microstructural properties such as collagen organization and orientation. Our work has shown that polarimetry is promising for applications such as disease screening and diagnosis, particularly in the context of gastrointestinal cancers - metrics such as linear retardance and degree of polarization (DOP) can be used to detect areas of abnormal tissue and disease. Despite the clinical potential of polarization, there are barriers for practical use in fiber bundle-based endoscopic medical instruments. In such devices, a coherent imaging fiber bundle (CIFB) is used to transmit an image from the device tip (distal end) to a sensor on the back end. Due to the depolarization effects of the fibers, recovering polarization information through a CIFB is challenging. To address this, we have developed the architecture for a polarimetric endoscope capable of acquiring DOP information through a CIFB by integrating a pixelated polarizer on the distal end of the CIFB. In this talk, I will present the design of this system, the calibration approach used to acquire polarimetric information, and early results of testing.
